Using bigger needles and adding stitches can be used when increasing sweater sizes. You could use one size bigger needle than suggested by the pattern, but make sure to knit a swatch to check your gauge. If it's too big, then I would suggest adding stitches. Add about 1/2 inch on each side of front and back body pieces. Then follow the armhole decrease instruction. Just remember that you have extra stitches when doing the neck decrease and shoulder seams.
