Making up my knitting into a jumper

I have 2 old knitting patterns for jumpers and they both say don’t press before making up the jumper, why is that?

Hello Elaine,

Great question you asked!
I don't really know why. My guess is that your jumper may have some types of pattern like cable or lace. Pressing (steaming) before joining may cause the cable or intricate pattern to alter.
I really have no clue. If I ever find out, I will give you an update.
