Hi Shaila,

Thanks for the question.

In this pattern, you’re shaping the top of the bootie using a block pattern while leaving part of the row unworked. This creates a section that will form the front part of the bootie, like the instep.

Explanation:

• K9, p2, k2, p2, leave remaining sts unworked:
This means that you are working only a part of the row and leaving the rest of the stitches on your needle. You’ll turn your work after you finish the "p2" and work back on those stitches only.
• "Slip all sts with yarn in front":
For the next few rows, you’ll be slipping the first stitch of each row with the yarn held in front (sl1wyif). This creates a neat edge and is important for maintaining the structure of the block pattern.
• The next rows guide you through a combination of knits and purls, working over those middle stitches (you are essentially working short rows over the center of the bootie). When it says "turn," it means you will flip your work and go back the other way without working all the stitches across.
• After you’ve worked these rows, you’ll return to working across all the stitches again (Row 10 and Row 11 show this).

How to proceed:

1. Work the k9, p2, k2, p2, then turn your work. Leave the remaining stitches on the needle unworked for now.
2. Follow each row as written, slipping the first stitch, working across the center stitches, and turning your work. Each row builds the block pattern on the top of the bootie.
3. Once you complete Row 10, you will return to working all the stitches across the row again to finish the bootie.

I hope this helps clarify your question. Happy knitting!
Ratcha.
