I enjoy working with cable patterns like this Celtic Plait Panel. I often get interrupted during knitting and can't knit cable without having a row counter with me. It's a good idea to keep track of your work on a row counter every time you knit a pattern with more than 2-3 rows.
This Celtic plait is not very hard to knit. I love learning new stitches (in this case, T5F and T5B) and very much excited to see the results reveal. This pattern has only 8 repeated rows and is easy to follow. I think it will make a good headband or a front of a sweater or this Celtic Purse. Enjoy!
Worked over a multiple of 10+5 (minimum 25) The example show in the picture above is worked over 25 stitches with garter stitch background.
1st Foundation row (right side): K3, *p4, k6, rep from * to last 2 sts, p2.
2nd Foundation row: K2, *p6, k4; rep from * to last 3 sts, p3.
Row 1: K3, *p4, C6F; rep from * to last 2 sts, p2.
Row 2: K2, *p6, k4; rep from * to last 3 sts, p3.
Row 3: *T5F, T5B; rep from * to last 5 sts, T5F.
Row 4: P3, *k4, p6; rep from * to last 2 sts, k2.
Row 5: P2, * C6B, p4; rep from * to last 3 sts, k3.
Row 6: P3, *k4, p6; rep from * to last 2 sts, k2.
Row 7: *T5B, T5F; rep from * to last 5 sts, T5B.
Row 8: K2, *p6, k4; rep from * to last 3 sts, p3.
Repeat these 8 rows to form a long Celtic Plait Panel.
K = knit
P = purl
sts = stitches
rep = repeat

C6F or C6B (cable 6 front or cable 6 back) = slip next 3 sts onto cable needle and hold at front (or back) of work, knit next 3 sts from left-hand needle, then knit sts from cable needle. Make sure not to twist the cable needle.
T5F (twist 5 front) = slip next 3 sts onto cable needle and hold at front of work, purl next 2 sts from left-hand needle, then knit sts from cable needle.
T5B (twist 5 back) = slip next 2 sts onto cable needle and hold at back of work, knit next 3 sts from left-hand needle, then purl sts from cable needle.
