I like to start my new ball of yarn at the beginning of a row. This way I don't have to worry about having a knot somewhere in the middle of the project. I usually tide them just one time and then weave in the ends behind work.
Some knitters like to join yarns using invisible technique. You have to weave the yarn ends together.
There are many videos on youtube on joining yarn that you can check them out. They are pretty helpful.
