This sounds like a cable stitch without a cable.
Sometimes, you can loose a slipped stitch if not careful.
I would suggest placing a slipped stitch (more like a dropped st) on a cable needle or double pointed needle for time being.
Here is how to do it;
K2, sl 1 st on to a cable needle and leave it in front of work, knit the next 2 sts, then go back and knit a stitch on a cable. You now have a right st crossing over 2 left sts.
After doing this for awhile you may want to try without a cable needle.
