I think it is possible that the "M1 (yfd)" supposes to be an increase of yarn forward only. The "yfd" is in the parenthesis makes me think that it suggests to use yfd when making an increase otherwise it would use the comma in between.
What do you think? Try that and see if you'll come up with the correct number of stitches.
